The text is in fact ambiguous on this. We are left with a picture of Jonah struggling with the idea that the life of a plant can be of lesser worth than a city inhabited by 120.000 children… and animals! Yet the conclusion of the story pushed that question about what we judge to be of true value right to the forefront of my mind… it is evident that we still need courage and boldness, trust and determination to promote the sanctity of 'life' and seek to avoid repeating the atrocities of Beslan, Winnenden, Victoria Climbie, Kyra Ishaq. It was in fact good not knowing the next or final stage of Jonah's life… because for me he moved on and sought to make a difference… knowing that we need not fear what lies ahead, and we need not fear our true selves!
