Space Full of Mercy And Rest: Lyrics & Synopsis |
|
Lyrics
Got a magic cure To beat a prevailing song My need for perspective To hear her searing voice once more
I'm taking time out to view the test There to put our best behind us
So from Joppa we sailed Went on a worthwhile thing A need for direction As clear as the day you bring
Any lands to save my skin A paradise to let me in Tarshish port I'm bound To hear her searing voice once more
I'm taking time out to view the test There to put our best behind us From place on place There to put our best behind us
Synopsis
This track, although unintentionally, summarises the whole narrative. I was unsure where it should lie amongst the other songs… and I was even more unsure whether to refer explicitly to the places mentioned in the text, but soon realized that they really only play a peripheral part. Tarshish can translate broadly as 'sea port'. What is most significant is that the journey has been worthwhile. The past must not become an obstacle to the future, and those experiences that we may regard as being 'almost like another lifetime away' can be integrated into where our feet stand now. Some philosophers talk about the 'existential test' that we all undergo in time… and Jonah can be sure that he has passed his, even if it has raised a few questions about this 'God thing' in his mind. With Sandra's vocal and Wayne's humming bass it really caught the idea that we can lose our preconceptions… that we can arrive at positive space… all that lies behind leere as an idea!
