Tramlines: Lyrics & Synopsis
Lyrics

There's a part of me that hurts
Cause I'm going away
For you know how the night sits…
So comfortably

There's a bit of me that thinks
I'm going to see you again
For you know how the place was lit…
So magically

For over the Elbe
There is a breeze
There is a quiet now
There is an ease
I get it watching tramlines
Easing ways through to your side

There's a tide in me that turns
From child-like into man
For you know how a smile gives birth
To life again

There's a tremor in me that strikes
As the days stretch out
For you know in the music we can never
Go without

And over the Elbe
There is a breeze
There is a quiet now
There is an ease
I get it watching tramlines
Weaving ways through to your side

For over the Elbe
There is a breeze
There is a quiet now
There is an ease
I get it watching tramlines
Easing ways through to your side

Would you talk to me of the children
Cause they're all under the sun, the sun
Clocks give a time and You gave out truth
Feel a religion arising

Would you laugh with me of the children
Cause we're all under the sun, the sun
Clocks give a time and You gave a truth
Amid religion… a blessed one

Over the Elbe
There is a breeze
There is a quiet now
There is an ease
I get it watching tramlines
Weaving ways through to your side

Stepping on high
You with the fare
Rare is the smile
That's taken me there
I see this goodness
Standing, honest to be at your side

There's a part of me that thanks you
Cause I'm going away
For you know how the night sits…
So comfortably

Synopsis

I visited Dresden three times in the space of eight months during 2007-8. The city sits magically on the River Elbe and the architecture and the history of the city really pushes the visitor to think about the courage and the trust that underpinned the re-building of the city after the destruction of Feb 13th 1945.  I shared some time with very important friends there, of all ages, and I noted their serenity and their sincere aspirations for peace. It was a track that was always outside of the narrative for me, but on reflection there is much in the lyric and the context to suggest overlap with Jonah and the Nineveh experience. The breakdown works great, and the smile… believe me… was a special one!
