St. Catherine
Came on a chapel that bore your name
There I breathed in and out again
Such a cool light taking me home
Though quite capable of leaving me there
Any pure thought than this
The walls so close for me to kiss
Such a cool light taking me home
Though quite capable of leaving me there
And all this presence was hiding in this absence
I'm more than an ordinary soul
Just wanting to get to you
She sounded surprised
Giving her name so unrivalled
As the one as St. Catherine
And making use of this really cool light
I'll put to words the things that are out of sight
In a plain and a four walled room
You see the things you want so soon
Came on a chapel that bore your name
There I breathed in and out again
With this cool light taking me home
Though quite capable of leaving me there
And all this presence was hiding in this absence
I'm more than an ordinary soul
Just wanting to get to you
She sounded surprised
Giving her name so unrivalled
As the one as St. Catherine
St. Catherine Meaning
Simon has always been fascinated by what constitutes a ‘sacred space’, and so, when visiting family once, he went along to the very ornate Derby Cathedral. Underneath the nave he found St Catherine’s Chapel. He was struck by its peacefulness and simplicity – the stone walls, cross, altar and small benches. The song St Catherine is inspired by that simplicity which is religion in its purest form, your own private response to God rather than the ritual and tradition which surrounds it.
Lions
I’d never looked so keen
At her heart in a stand
For there so near to truth
With such a story to tell
Passing ideas
Look alive with the sun
Alive with the one
And just as you had said
We met up on that day
Baby will it pass
I heard it could pass
Lifting me beyond
And I’m grappling with stars
I heard it could pass
Wait for it to lead you, hand in hand, you should demand it
Just as I turn from it, I yearn for it
I thought I heard you say
There were Lions in the Way
And I don’t expect to stay
Where I see Lions in the Way (x2)
How you spoke there and then
To merge the new with the old
I might have felt pulled
From the world that I’d known
Tonight she’s going to look
On the worthless and cheap
The worthless and cheap
I’d never looked so keen
At her heart met a dance
For there so near to truth
I had some story to tell
Passing ideals
Come alive with the One
Alive with the One
Wait for it to lead you, hand in hand, you should demand it
Just as I turn from it, I yearn for it
I thought I heard you say
There were Lions in the Way
And I can’t expect to stay
Where I see Lions in the Way (x2)
Bound To Beat You Back
She’s parted with the dead dollar
She knows it won’t buy up a single thing
She’s seething resentment
And for all the life in that dollar
She’s going to play with the stars in her lovesick ways
She’s seething resentment
Will there be such a word
Of colour, bloodletting or form
She’s parted with the dead dollar
She knows it won’t buy up a single thing
She’s seething resentment
From my view you’ve distorted all things
Made my life the riddle that it ain’t
From my view you’ve distorted all things
Made my life the riddle that it ain’t
And who is now gonna save you
Who is now gonna save you
You can’t love anymore
For every man will beat you back
Where woman shouts they’re bound to beat you back
He’s played out every ‘God bless you’
Before the war he gave us
All his pained expression
And chasing the sound of ‘God bless you’
He’s left it ringing in their ears
With no balance and all depressing
Will there be such a word
Of colour, bloodletting or form
He’s played out every ‘God bless you’
She’s gonna walk with outsiders
To claim them outsiders no more
From my view you’ve distorted all things
Made my life the riddle that it ain’t
From my view you’ve distorted all things
Made my life the riddle that it ain’t
And who is now gonna to save you
Who is now gonna save you
You can’t love anymore
For every man will beat you back
Where woman shouts they’re bound to beat you back

New York Of This Isle
I’ll talk with you
Because you’re more energy
Than you’re soul resistant
And I’ll walk with you
Because you think a little
Before you make commitment
I have seen you amidst relation
And that’s what I call progress
I have seen you amidst relation
And that’s where I can focus
But how, how could it happen
How could it happen?
It would have never gone down in the centre of the world
My New York of this Isle
You were saying
That you believed
All the best songs had been written
But you were still
Inspired enough to listen
To my position
I have seen you amidst relation
And that’s where I can focus
I have seen you amidst religion
And that’s what I call progress
But how, how could it happen
How could it happen?
It would have never gone down in the centre of the world
My New York of this Isle
(repeat)
Priestfield
So I have come on this day
Across the swathes of land bowing before me
I will hear the ripples shortly
From the Rainham End to the Medway
And I have come this way
Across the swathes of land baying before me
I hear the singing shortly
From the Rainham End to the Medway
You've got the height of my attention woooah
As only promises can
You're with me as the seasons change
I'm present as the seasons change
For there's a party
And its planned for my hometown
To stretch the colours of blue and white
The sky, the clouds
And way beyond of Priestfield
Sure it's worthless without the journey
Across the swathes of land bending before me
I know the game starts shortly
And yesteryear...is here, in its time
You've got the height of my attention woooah
As only promises can
You're with me as the seasons change
I'm present as the seasons change
For there's a party
And its planned for my hometown
To stretch the colours of blue and white
The sky, the clouds
And way beyond of Priestfield
You're with me as the seasons change
I'm present as the seasons change
For there's a party
And its planned for my hometown
To stretch the colours of blue and white
The sky, the clouds
And way beyond of Priestfield
For there's a party
And its planned for my hometown
To stretch the colours of blue and white
The sky, the clouds
And way beyond of Priestfield
Hazel
When, when I came to you Hazel
Barely able to speak
Barely able to speak
Was your cry, then your laugh for me
As safely timed as my current state of poverty
And when, when I come through Hazel
I’m there and able to speak
I’m there and able to speak
Did you cry and then laugh for me
Out of the blue or for my sorry state of poverty
And a bad feeling and yet you purged my sense of it
Haaazel
Such a bad feeling, there to purge my sense of it
And that’s the part of it that I’m really crazy about
When, when the whole thing seems dark
You there and able to weep
You there and able to weep
Was your laugh, then your cry for me
As neatly timed as my current state of poverty
When, when I came to you Hazel
Barely able to speak
Barely able to speak
Was your cry, then your laugh for me
As safely timed as my current state of poverty
And a bad feeling and yet you purged my sense of it
Haaazel
Such a bad feeling, there to purge my sense of it
And that’s the part of it that I’m really crazy about
Bad feeling and yet you purged my sense of it
Haaazel
Such a bad feeling, there to purge my sense of it
And that’s the part of it that I’m really crazy about
Keeping both of your beautiful eyes on the cause
Keeping both of your beautiful eyes on the cause
Clays of Cold
Based on the Wilfred Owen poem ‘Futility’
Move him into the sun
Gently its touch awoke him once
Move him into the sun
Gently its touch awoke him once
Until this morning it always awoke him
Until this morning it always awoke him
At home whispering of the fields unsown
Woke at once to the clays of a cold, cold, star
See how it woke the seed
Limbs so dear achieved are warm
Think how it woke the seed
Limbs so dear achieved still warm
Until this morning it always awoke him
Until this morning it always awoke him
At home whispering of the fields unsown
Woke at once to the clays of a cold, cold, star
Sunbeams toil and love’s not slept at all
Sunbeams toil and love’s not slept at all
Sunbeams toil and love’s not slept at all
Until this morning it always awoke him
Until this morning it always awoke him
Until this morning it always awoke him
At home whispering of the fields unsown
Woke at once to the clays of a cold, cold, star
The Avenue
Will the Avenue be ours
Will the sunshine collect our souls up
Now that you've given me part of me back
The only thing that kept confusing me
Was this lonely sun
And if it had truly gone
And was she seeing me so desperate to sit with it
The only thing that kept alluding me
Was this lonely sun
And if it had truly gone
And did she see me so desperate to sit with it
Will the Avenue be ours
Will the sunshine collect our souls up
Now that you've given me part of me back
The only thing that I'd refused to see
Is the highest sun
And how once it had shone
And if she'd taken some light from the absence of thou there
The only thing that I'd refused to see
Was this highest sun
And how once it had shone
And had she taken some light from the absence of thou there
Will the Avenue be ours
Will the sunshine collect our souls up
Now that you've given me part of me back
Now that you've given me part of me back
Please Stay
Put your name at the heart of all I do
I'd mount your picture by the television screen
So it's all serene
In my eyeline,
Forever and it's good
Press your name to the heart of all I do
I'd heap the pressure on myself to act fine
Treat you so kind
In the skyline
Forever and it's good
Saw a wondrous animal within me
Saw a wondrous animal within me
But where did it all go
Where did it all go
Please Stay
Cause the woman that you are can drive a soul along its way
Please Stay
Cause the funnier you are, you know the brighter is my day...
The brighter is my day
Please Stay
Push your name to the fore of all I do
I'd hold you up at the times you fall low
Help you to know
The love that caught me
Forever and is good
Put your heart at the name of all I do
I'd mount your pictures by the television screen
So its all serene
In my eyeline
Forever and it's good
Saw a wondrous animal within me
Saw a wondrous animal within me
But where did it all go
Where
did it all go
Please Stay
Cause the woman that you are can drive a soul along its way
Please Stay
Cause the funnier you are, you know the brighter is my day...
The brighter is my day
Please Stay
In a real sense the path's unwinding
In a real sense the path's unwinding
Please Stay
Cause the woman that you are can drive a soul along its way
Please Stay
Cause the funnier you are, you know the brighter is my day...
The brighter is my day
And the prettier you are, you know the sweeter is my day
Please Stay
Woodbine Street (for Paul Brook)
On the edge of town you'd hear a rhythm and a rhyme
And you'd find a craftsman carving deep into time
With tools of space and sound, words speaking as sign
Seeing the day out together
We follow patterns, we sing his colours
Again he's with us
We follow patterns
Heard on Woodbine Street
(sleep well, chap)
At the edge of town you'd hear a rhythm and a rhyme
You'd find a craftsman of a musical kind
Gifts rare and sought it was a lesson sublime
Seeing the day out together
On the edge of town you'd hear a rhythm and a rhyme
And you'd find a craftsman carving deep into time
With tools of space and sound, words speaking as sign
Seeing the day out together
We follow patterns, we sing his colours
And again he's with us
We follow patterns
Learnt on Woodbine Street
(and it all sounds so good)
